The Basics: What is Power Steering?

Power steering is a system designed to make it easier for you to control your vehicle. If you’ve ever driven a vehicle that has lost it, you know exactly why it’s so important.

There are two types of steering:

Electric Power Steering

An electrical system uses sensors to translate the actions of the driver and steering wheel to the movement and direction of the vehicle. The system also relies on an electric motor versus a hydraulic pump. They are the more common system in modern vehicles because they offer versatility and fuel efficiency with less maintenance.

Hydraulic Power Steering

Hydraulic systems rely on a hydraulic pump and pressurized fluid to direct the wheels via a rack and piston mechanism or a piston. It is less efficient and requires more maintenance that an electric system; however, it is also a reliable, simple system that can still be found in some modern cars and many older make/models.

Both systems utilize fluid, but hydraulic systems are reliant on it for full function, while the electric system uses it for lubrication and cooling.

Signs Your Steering Needs Service

Difficulty Steering, Especially While Turning

Difficulty steering is by far the most common and recognizable indicator your power steering is having a problem. It’s different from a flat tire or an alignment issue. You will typically experience the most problems while driving at lower speeds or turning. It may feel like you are fighting your car for control — there’s a reason those older, heavier cars without it had giant steering wheels. Drivers needed extra help!

Burning Smell

A burning smell can be caused by leaking fluid dropping onto the hot engine or by the pump burning out. This smell will be most prominent while driving or immediately after you park your car.

Odd Noises

If your power steering fluid is low or your power steering pump is malfunctioning, you may hear squealing or creaking noises during turns.

Fluid Leaks

If you notice red drips or puddles beneath your car, it is a sign of a power steering fluid leak. Older fluid may also appear brown. If you notice a fluid leak, you should bring your car in for an inspection.

Rattling, Swerving or Pulling

The car may pull hard in one direction or feel loose and jerky while driving. You may also experience rattling or vibration through the steering wheel.

Use your owner’s manual to locate the reservoir in your engine compartment. The access to the reservoir may have a power steering fluid symbol on the lid that looks like a steering wheel or a steering wheel with waves beneath it. As always, Honest Accurate customers get all of their fluids topped off as part of their oil change service. That includes power steering fluid

Fresh power steering fluid is red. Over time, however, it can degrade to a brownish red or brown color.
