Interesting Land Rover Facts:

Land Rover created the first ever Monster Truck 30 years before anyone else!  In the 1950’s the British Forestry Commission demanded that someone create a road vehicle that could tackle the deepest mud puddles.  Land Rover came to the rescue, bolting on four tractor tires and beefy axles from a Studebaker to a Series IIA, giving birth to the first monster truck in history!

Land Rover hated paying taxes and took extreme measures to make sure their buyers did have to pay taxes either.  The Land Rover Defender 110 could technically fit up to 12 passengers, qualifying as a ‘bus” by the British taxman’s standards.  This qualification allowed them to be exempt from the tax system on passenger vehicles!  These buyers also gained the added advantage of using the bus lanes and skipping out on all the ridiculous London traffic!

The very first Land Rover ever built had the steering wheel in the middle!  Modeled after WWII era Jeeps, the designer had used one on his farm in Wales.  To keep things simple and more tractor-like, the steering wheel was put in the middle.  Having the steering wheel in the center also kept the manufacturer from having to create two different versions of the car for each the left and right-hand drive markets!
