For some people buying a used car is akin to pulling teeth. Before your next used car buying adventure, do yourself a big favor and take the car into an ASE certified technician before you actually consummate the deal.
A Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) is good insurance against inheriting a character building experience along with your new (used) car. Sure, you can look under the hood, kick the tires, hear it run, but is that the whole story? Well, as Paul Harvey used to say, “Here’s the rest of the story.” Unless you have specific automotive technical skills, an overhead car hoist and about $20,000 of high-tech supercool tools and diagnostic equipment, you better stick with your day job, ‘cuz otherwise you’re just whistling Dixie.
Here’s what the average Joe can’t do…
· Pull the wheels to look at brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, rotors and accurately measure them.
· Look for oil/coolant leaks and, if there are any, where do they originate…is it (are they) serious or just annoying???
· Inspect the axle CV joint, steering rack boots/seals. Are they torn or leaking?
· Check the condition of the shocks, struts, motor mounts, ball joints, tie rod ends, trailing arm bushings. Are they worn out or loose?
Enough said! When is a “deal” not a “deal”?? It’s when you pay $2000 for your teenager’s first car and then end up spending $3000 to make it right and safe.
Before your next character building adventure, call your honest accurate ASE certified technician and schedule a PPI…you’ll be glad you did!
