Are you prepared (like the Boy Scouts!)? If you have unexpected engine trouble, a flat tire, or severe weather that leaves you stranded on the side of the road, having a few basic items in your car can mean the difference between getting back on the road safely or being in a dangerous situation.
Below are some recommended items to have in your Roadside Emergency Kit. Christmas gift idea: gather a few of these items to give to that special someone!
Jumper cables: Don’t skimp here, have a good set of cables with multiple-strand, four gauge copper wire. It is important for them to work when you need them.
Jack and Tire Iron: If you have a spare tire, but do not have the tools to change the tire, you will still be stranded. Also, be sure to check the air pressure in your spare tire and make sure it is properly inflated.
Emergency Flares/ Markers: Use these to alert passing vehicles that you are on the side of the road, or as a distress signal for a serious emergency.
Flashlight: If your emergency is at night, you will have a hard time fixing anything without light -don’t forget to include extra batteries.
Small Tool Kit: Include pliers, screwdrivers (flat and Phillips head), adjustable wrench, vise grips, tire pressure gauge, duct tape, pocket knife. Also include a Rescue Tool, specifically made to break glass and cut seat belt webbing in the unfortunate instance where you are stuck in your car.
Fire Extinguisher: A small ABC fire extinguisher made for vehicles (for wood, paper, cloth, gasoline/oil/grease, and electrical equipment). Not often needed, but when it is needed, you probably won’t have time to borrow one!
Blanket, extra clothing/gloves, matches/lighter, bottled water, and a few snacks: If you are stuck in the cold, or for a particularly long period of time, you will appreciate having taken the time to store these in your car.
First Aid Kit: Include bandages, antiseptic cream, ice/heat compresses, and aspirin.
Supplies: Two quarts of engine oil, gallon of antifreeze, and extra windshield wiper fluid.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Even the safest drivers run into occasional problems, so be prepared.
