How to Measure Your Tire Tread With A Penny

The only surface on your car that connects you to the road is your tires. Adequate tire tread is essential to keep your car riding the road safely, especially on wet roads.

How To Measure Tire Tread Tire tread depth should be greater than 2/32” to be effective.

An easy way to measure tire tread depth is to place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire, with Lincoln’s head down in between the tread.  If part of Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread, you have at least 2/32” tread depth.

However, if you can see ALL of Lincoln’s head, you have less than 2/32” tread and are due for new tires. Also, be sure and measure across different areas of the tire, and note whether the tread depth measures evenly.  If tires are not wearing evenly, check for incorrect tire pressure or improper wheel alignment as the possible culprits. You can increase the life of your tires by maintaining proper alignment and proper air pressure.

Stop in at either of our auto repair shops in Colorado Springs for a quick air pressure check, or make an appointment for an alignment check. As tires wear, it is important to realize that the tire’s ability to properly perform in rain and snow will be reduced. Tire manufacturers also place indicators that are molded into their tread design called “wear bars” to warn drivers when the tire tread depth is insufficient to perform safely.

Next time you park your car, turn your tires to the side so that you can examine your tire tread.
